Along with its important task of enabling our visual tasks, lighting can
express an aesthetic vision.
Architecture, a streetscape, and the landscape are all revealed and
shaped by the careful control of light on its surfaces. Similar to how theater lighting designers manipulate
our experience on the stage through lighting intensity, direction and color,
architectural lighting designers create scenes in our everyday experience, and
can
highlight a building within a city or feature a person within a room. The IESGG Spring Seminar Series addresses how
master designers use light to achieve effects in a series of seminars called Lighting at
the Theatrical Edge. These designers
from across the country have agreed to teach in this innovative series that
explores the most creative solutions to building architectural scenes.
All seminars are offered the 4th Wednesday of the month from 6:00 - 9:00
pm at the Pacific Energy Center in San Francisco. Courses can be taken
individually or as the whole series. The level is intermediate.
Fees: $60 per seminar or $200 for the series.
Each program earns 3.0 NCQLP LEUs, IESNA CEUs, or 3.0 AIA Learning
Units (members only)
Electronic
certificates for proof
of attendance for other organizations are available.

Mar. 26 Garden Evolution - Changes that Affect and
are Affected by Lighting
Jan Moyer, Principal
Jan Moyer
Design
Brunswick, NY
As a garden matures, trees and other plantings change
shape, size, even color. Seasonal
changes in a landscape bring a variety of visual scenes as well. Lighting must adapt to these changes. In addition, lighting reveals new scenes as
nature changes the garden. Jan Moyer
shows us how to anticipate and bring out the best in a landscape that is never
static.

30 The Emotive Power of Light in the
Built Environment
Randy Burkett, Principal
Randy Burkett Lighting Design,
Inc.
St. Louis, MO
The built environment has the power to move people who
experience it visually. Creating scenes
that have that power is a collaboration between the architect, the interior
designer and the lighting designer, who finesses the light and shadow to create
the final impact. Randy Burkett
demonstrates how he has successfully created many scenes to achieve emotional
impact.
